Environmentalists sue to stop Utah potash mine that produces sought-after crop fertilizer SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Environmentalists filed a lawsuit on Monday to prevent the construction of a new potash mine that they say would devastate a lake ecosystem in the drought-stricken western Utah desert. The complaint against the Bureau of Land Management is the latest development in the battle over potash in Utah, which holds some of the United States’ largest deposits of the mineral used by farmers to fertilize crops worldwide.Potash, or potassium sulfate, is currently mined in regions including Carlsbad, New Mexico and at Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats, where the Bureau of Land Management also oversees a private company’s potash mining operations. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance argues in Monday’s complaint that, in approving a potash mining operation at Sevier Lake — a shallow saltwater lake about halfway between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas — the Bureau of Land Management failed to consider alternatives that would cause fewer environmental impacts. ...

BNSF train engineers offered paid sick time and better schedules in new deal OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Roughly 7,500 BNSF train engineers may soon get up to eight days of paid sick time and more certainty about their days off if they approve a new deal with the railroad announced Tuesday.BNSF and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union said engineers will get more predictable schedules and the ability to take sick time off without being penalized under the Fort Worth-Texas based railroad’s strict attendance policy. The major freight railroads have made a great deal of progress on the sick time issue since workers’ quality of life concerns pushed the industry to the brink of a strike last year before Congress forced the unions to accept a contract. More than 77% of all those workers have now been promised sick time. The railroads refused to add sick time to last year’s deal that included 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses.BNSF engineers will get five days of paid sick leave and be permitted to convert three other leave days into sic...

A test case challenging election results in Texas’ biggest county follows a post-Trump playbook HOUSTON (AP) — Harris County, Texas, beset by Republicans looking to influence the Democratic stronghold’s elections, is hosting this week the first trial seeking to overturn local contest results from last November. Similar court challenges have become more common around the country following baseless conspiracy theories spread by former President Donald Trump and his supporters alleging the 2020 presidential election was stolen by President Joe Biden’s backers. Election denialism is likely to make its way into the Houston, Texas, trial, which is expected to last two weeks and be decided by David Peeples, a visiting judge from San Antonio.Elections in the nation’s third-most populous county — and one with large numbers of Hispanic and Black voters — have been scrutinized for several years now. Some polling locations on Nov. 8 opened late or had long lines due to problems with voting machines. During the March 2022 primary, there was a shortage of poll workers and about 10,000...

Arrival of Phil Longo’s Air Raid offense has made Wisconsin more attractive to receivers MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Luke Fickell seemingly faced quite the challenge when he took over at Wisconsin and tried attracting receivers to a program known for running the ball.Turns out it wasn’t much of a problem at all. The arrival of former Ole Miss and North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo with his Air Raid offense suddenly made Wisconsin a much more intriguing destination.Longo’s hire as offensive coordinator meant Wisconsin was going to need to add more receivers. The Badgers did just that by landing CJ Williams from Southern California and Bryson Green from Oklahoma State, while Will Pauling and Quincy Burroughs followed Fickell from Cincinnati to Wisconsin.“It’s one of the deepest rooms of receivers I’ve had in a long time,” Longo said Tuesday, a day before the Badgers begin training camp at Platteville, Wisconsin. “I don’t know who the elite guys are yet. That will get established this year, obviously, with how productive they are. But you go down and look at receiver...
