A former top San Jose city employee who worked for Mayor Matt Mahan is suing him, the city and one of his top deputies in federal court on defamation charges, accusing the two of falsely blaming her for leaking information last year about Mahan’s choice for the vice mayor seat.About one week into her job as the mayor’s budget director in January 2023, Stacey Katz Brown alleges Mahan and Chief of Staff Jim Reed wrongly pointed the finger at her for tipping off Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez — Mahan’s opponent in a hotly contested race for the city’s top job in 2022 — to the nomination of Vice Mayor Rosemary Kamei. Brown said she was then fired. When reached for comment, a spokesperson for the mayor deferred to Reed, who wrote in a statement, “The lawsuit is baseless and we intend to fully defend against these falsehoods.”Attorney James McManis, who is representing Brown, called Mahan and Reed’s actions a “terrible...Bay Point man arrested in ridiculous crossbow theft

SANTA CLARA — A stealth benefit of earning the No. 1 seed for the 49ers is buying more time for Arik Armstead’s hopeful comeback.Armstead was producing better than he had in years on the defensive line’s interior, up until foot and knee injuries sidelined him four games ago.The 49ers (12-4) have another two weeks before their playoff opener, and that provides enough of a ramp-up period to potentially get Armstead on track for a return.“That’s our hope,” general manager John Lynch said Friday morning on KNBR 680-AM. “The No. 1 seed, when you talk about what it means, it means some extra time for a guy like Arik. He’s been working through some foot and knee injuries, and making a great deal of progress.”Armstead won’t be playing Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams, nor will quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey. But the 49ers can’t stash everyone for the playoffs, so expect to se...San Quentin prison project’s $360 million price tag should be slashed, governor’s advisory group says

By TRÂN NGUYỄN | Associated PressSACRAMENTO — An advisory council hand-picked by California Gov. Gavin Newsom recommended Friday that the governor slash by at least a third the cost of a $360 million project to remake the San Quentin State Prison, and use the saved money to improve living conditions at the facility. The Democratic governor last year announced plans to transform San Quentin, where the state performed executions, into a model for preparing people for life on the outside — a shift from the state’s decadeslong focus on punishment. The ambitious vision includes a plan to tear down an old furniture factory on the prison grounds and replace it with a building more reminiscent of a college campus, with a student union and classrooms. Lawmakers greenlit the project without knowing its details during budget negotiations last year, and also relinquished any formal oversight of the planning process. The 21-member advisory council, headed by Newsom political ally and Sacramento Ma...Oakland community to hold vigil for officer slain in line of duty

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is drifting Friday after reports showed a strong job market is giving workers bigger raises, but key parts of the economy still don’t look like they’re overheating. The S&P 500 was 0.1% higher in afternoon trading, though it’s still on track for its first losing week in the last 10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 75 points, or 0.2%, as of 12:13 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.2% higher.Treasury yields swung sharply in the bond market following a set of reports on the economy. They initially climbed after the latest monthly jobs report showed U.S. employers unexpectedly accelerated their hiring last month. Average hourly pay for workers also rose, when economists had been forecasting a dip.Such strong numbers are good news for workers, and they should keep the economy humming. That’s a positive for corporate profits, which are one of the main things that set prices for stocks. But Wall Street’s worry is the...Latest news
