Chappell Roan is pop’s newest “it-girl,” climbing the charts with hit songs like “Pink Pony Club” and “Casual,” and turning the music industry on its head with a unique blend of genres encompassing everything from dance ballads to disco and country.Nothing about her is conventional — not her songs, and not her shows. Instead of using traditional opening acts, Roan brings local drag performers to her stage. Instead of regular concert attire, she asks that her audiences dress in accordance to themed nights like “Slumber Party” or “Angels vs. Devils.” At every turn, Roan surprises and subverts. She’s taking the world by storm, but the skies have been brewing for a long time now. As a teenager, Roan began uploading videos of her songs to YouTube, and in 2017, she was signed by Atlantic Records. Shortly after, she moved from her hometown in Springfield, Missouri to Los Angeles in efforts to focus on her music career. While still with Atlanta Records, Roan rele...Harry and Meghan’s biographer takes aim at ‘power-hungry’ William, ‘unpopular’ Charles

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have publicly retreated from attacking the British royal family after apparently realizing that the British and American public have become tired of hearing them “whinge,” as the English say. But the California-based Duke and Duchess of Sussex still have their proxies putting forth the idea that they were badly mistreated by the monarchy and that only their star power could have helped an antiquated institution stay relevant in the 21st century. One of those proxies has long been biographer Omid Scobie. Described as the Sussexes’ “mouthpiece,” and even as Meghan’s “lapdog,” the royal author has ramped up promotion for what he promises is a scathing new book about the royal family, which will offer an “explosive” and “penetrative investigation into the current state of the British monarchy,” The Telegraph reported. The description for Scobie’s “Endgame” brands Charle...San Jose retail center could be replaced by affordable housing project

SAN JOSE — An affordable housing development with well over 100 units is being eyed on a San Jose site now occupied by a small retail strip center, a fresh example of a fast-shifting real estate landscape in the Bay Area. The proposed development would be located at 1190 Hillsdale Avenue in San Jose, the site of a retail center next to Almaden Expressway. The proposed development would consist of 160 apartments, according to a proposal on file with the San Jose Planning Department. The residences in the project are described as “affordable multifamily units,” according to very preliminary plans on file at City Hall.As prospects for office buildings and retail centers become murkier in a wobbly economy, real estate firms have increasingly turned to housing as a more fundamentally solid development option. It wasn’t immediately clear which real estate development company had proposed the project. An architectural firm filed the proposal. What is clear, according to...One person in critical condition after Berkeley shooting that involved an officer

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars and pass rusher Josh Allen have a starting point for contract negotiations. With Montez Sweat signing a four-year, $98 million extension with the Chicago Bears last week, that deal should provide a baseline — maybe even a blueprint — for Allen and the Jaguars moving forward.Allen ranks fifth in the NFL with nine sacks through eight games, putting up career numbers in a contract year. He’s been one of the many bright spots for the streaking Jaguars (6-2) through the first half of the season.Although some would argue that making Allen one of the NFL’s highest-paid edge rushers is risky considering he had 17 sacks over his previous three seasons, Jacksonville can’t afford to let him go.Not only has Allen been the team’s top defender in back-to-back years, signing draft picks to second contracts has been one of the small-market franchise’s biggest front-office failures over the past decade.Only 10 of the 76 draft picks betwee...Gen-Zers are getting career advice from TikTok. There are pitfalls

TikTok has given birth to a growing number of creators with various backgrounds giving all sorts of career advice, and younger adults are listening.A Resume Builder survey of Gen-Z and millennial TikTok users found half of them get career advice from the platform, and 1 in 5 have made decisions based on advice from TikTok creators. The trend began during the pandemic.“Because TikTok came to its height during the pandemic, it created this unique camaraderie that we haven’t seen in a long time and that spilled over into careers,” said Julia Toothacre, Resume Builder’s resume and career strategist. She added that “because there was so much happening during the pandemic with careers, and life and balancing and new opportunities, and we saw people saying ‘oh, that’s good advice. Maybe I should try that.'”Younger adults tend to be less skeptical of online content. Toothacre said TikTok creators seem more genuine to many users. What kind of career advice?...Father of July 4th parade shooting suspect pleads guilty to misdemeanors linked to son’s gun license

The court is part of the team’s primary marketing scheme for 2023-24, with plans calling for the Heat to use the new floor and the uniforms with ‘Culture’ across the front several times throughout the season.James took a trip down memory lane Monday, when asked about the court and reflecting on his four seasons with Miami — a span that led to four NBA Finals trips, along with the first two of his four NBA titles. Back then, ‘culture’ was a Heat philosophy and buzzword; it wasn’t splashed on shirts until years later.“We didn’t really talk about it too much,” James said. “It was just, you come in,...Latest news
