Justin Turner homers late, but Red Sox lose to Giants 4-3 in 11th inning

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 07:15:27 GMT

For nine years Justin Turner tormented the San Francisco Giants, making countless plays at his rivals’ expense while helping the Los Angeles Dodgers to eight NL West titles and a World Series championship. The fans in San Francisco haven’t forgotten, booing the former Dodger every time he came to the plate, but if they hoped to get in Turner’s head or throw him off his game, it didn’t work. After coming through with the game-tying two-run single late in Saturday night’s loss, Turner delivered in the clutch again Sunday with a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning. Unfortunately, just like Saturday, the bullpen couldn’t protect the lead and the Red Sox ultimately lost 4-3 on an 11th inning RBI single by Joc Pederson, who gave the Giants their second straight walk-off win.Turner’s big shot was the only meaningful offense the Red Sox got all day, and after failing to score the automatic runner in the top of the 10th and 11th the club was...

Yankees Notebook: Trade deadline options shrinking as rivals get better

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 07:15:27 GMT

BALTIMORE — With the trade deadline on Tuesday, there was plenty of activity around Major League Baseball on Saturday and Sunday. But at the time of publication, the Yankees had yet to make any moves. The first-place Rangers added ex-Mets righty Max Scherzer and ex-Yankees and Cardinals lefty Jordan Montgomery to their rotation. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays — who occupy the final wild card spot that the Yankees are chasing — acquired flame-throwing reliever Jordan Hicks from St. Louis. If a division rival upgrading wasn’t bad enough, the red-hot Cubs also decided to keep Cody Bellinger, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. Bellinger would have been a great — if not costly — fit for the Yankees, as his left-handed bat and glove could have helped an offense and defense that have often lacked.“You see it with interest,” Aaron Boone said Sunday of the flurry, but he added that his focus is on winning games. “It’s not something for...

He buried the eagle putt to get to 23-under par on the tournament. The second came on the 12th, when Hodges, coming off two pulled drives, on No. 10 and No. 11 that led to scrambling pars, blitzed his drive down the fairway, leaving himself with 256 yards to the pin. He fired a dart that softly landed 2 feet, 8 inches away for a kick-in eagle to all but end the competition.“Those were two of the greatest shots I ever hit,” Hodges said.Hodges alternated bogeys and birdies over his final four holes on Sunday at TPC Twin Cities, putting an exclamation point on the victory with a stuffed wedge from 115 yards out to just 16...
